It takes a special kind of courage to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. That courage was front and center last week when we debuted Neurofit, a new program in partnership with Santa Fe Family Life Center. The goal was simple: give adults on the autism spectrum a safe environment to learn workouts and gym equipment under the guidance of professional trainers who are adept at working with the developmentally disabled population. But in practice, it quickly became so much more.

The afternoon started with a wave of anticipation as ten participants gathered in the lobby, quietly sizing up the day ahead. Among them was Chris, accompanied by a neurotypical family member. Once the group got acquainted, they followed Coach Cassie into the workout zone, and that’s when the energy in the room completely shifted.

Coach Cassie introduced the colorful lineup of equipment spread across the floor: slamballs, resistance bands, and textured hedgehog pods. As she began explaining how to safely lift the first slamball, Chris decided she could use a little help with the demonstration. Without a hint of hesitation, Chris walked right up to the front, picked up the ball, and threw it down just as she described.

The room instantly lit up with shared smiles—and Chris was just getting started. At every single zone, as Coach Cassie explained the exercise, Chris was right there to deliver the follow-up demonstration. His enthusiasm was catching. By the final station, Chris’s confidence had broken the ice for everyone else, inspiring other participants to step up and join him in leading the demonstrations. As the group broke into a round of celebratory applause, Chris soaked in the glory, a proud, contagious smile stretching across his face.

Watching from the sidelines, Chris’s family member approached Coach Cassie, a look of pure, shocked awe on her face. “I didn’t know what to expect today,” she admitted. “I didn’t even know if he’d participate at all.”

But Chris didn’t just participate; his courage gave everyone else the green light to do the same. Armed with his demonstrations, the group spread out across the zones, building success on success with every set. For the rest of the hour, the gym was filled with the sounds of celebration, high-fives, and participants rallying each other on. A genuine sense of camaraderie had taken over the space.

As the session wound down and everyone packed up to leave, it was clear that what started as a plan for a regular workout might also just become the favorite new hangout for these adults.

Neurofit is offered to adults ages 18-years-old and up every Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in partnership with Santa Fe Family Life Center. To learn more and register for upcoming sessions, visit our website: https://autismoklahoma.org/events/
