We have always had a close and valuable relationship with Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) through our mutual love of making filmmaking accessible to as many Oklahomans as possible. In the past, OCCC has collaborated with our film program, Invisible Layers Productions (ILP) to develop accessible workshops for our filmmakers on the spectrum, creating unforgettable experiences.
This year, we were thrilled when OCCC reached out with a life-changing opportunity: their new summer initiative, “Trailblazers Thrive Together” (T3). Through this program, young filmmakers with developmental or intellectual disabilities can earn a Certificate of Mastery in Digital Cinema Production completely free of charge.
OCCC reached out to us specifically to make sure our filmmakers on the spectrum would apply, and as soon as we shared the news with eligible candidates, they promptly submitted their applications. Our ILP Program Co-director, Sarah Lauffenburger, supported our participants throughout the entire process to make sure everyone had everything they needed to be successful—weeks of emails, referrals, touch-bases, emotional encouragement and nearly unbearable anticipation.
It was during an ILP film shoot in July where our filmmaker Quinci suddenly yelled “Sarah! I got in!” She ran to Sarah and enveloped her in a tight hug. In the height of the joy, another filmmaker, Alex, announced to the team that he got in too! The ILP team celebrated the victories of their two friends with applause and hugs—the excitement in the room was electrifying, and the relief of anticipation was palpable.
Alex and Quinci started their journey in the T3 program with OCCC this summer. They’ve both expressed their excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to chase their dreams by pursuing a higher education.
Thank you Oklahoma City Community College for your continued partnership with us and your devotion to providing opportunities to communities who are often forgotten.
Good luck Alex and Quinci! We know you’ll do great, we believe in both of you and we look forward to hearing all about your adventures!
